Watermark University: Table Topics (A Toastmaster’s Tradition)

Most of the talking we do every day – simple conversation – is impromptu speaking. Yet for some residents, Table Topics is the most challenging activity on our calendar.

Table Topics continues a long-standing Toastmasters tradition which we include in our daily schedule. When we meet, every resident has the opportunity to speak. But it’s about more than just carrying on an anxiety-ridden tradition. Table Topics is about developing your ability to organize your thoughts quickly and respond to an impromptu question or topic. Resident Diane M. commented on the activity, “you’d be surprised at how much you don’t know about your friends.”

Residents particularly enjoy the “Happiness” Table Topics Set. Charlotte S. adds, “being happy is more than just a mood, it’s an art.” Each card in this set features a factual tidbit, tip, or quotation, along with a corresponding question to prompt thoughtful discussion. We should tell you there may be side effects – research shows that people who engage in deep conversations are happier than those who stick to small talk. And, frankly, we couldn’t be happier about it!
